Why This Consultation
The different aspects of village computing have been widely discussed in multiple studies, reports, conferences, meetings, and online networks. Although knowledge about village computing is growing, we perceive that:
- this knowledge is often fragmented in micro-level case studies and isolated reports, and
- there is not much communication between people who work in different areas and who have expertise in different aspects of this increasingly complex and interrelated field.
In other words, we feel there is a need to create a space for sharing and systematizing practical knowledge about village computing from a macro perspective, and to stimulate collective understanding in this area.
This consultation is a first step in response to this perceived need. It seeks to bring together experts from different areas of village computing (from technology and infrastructure to policy and content service provision, among others) around the world to create a broad snapshot of the current state of village computing and the environment that is shaping its development. As a result, we expect that this consultation will:
- Generate insights for planning and action in the field of village computing for practitioners, policymakers, and technology and service developers and providers.
- Strengthen the foundation for future research in this field.
- Foster more active dialogue and collaboration between experts in village computing who come from different areas of thought and action, and who until now have been relatively isolated from each other.
